Frequently Asked Questions

Where is OLUV made?

OLUV work exclusively with key independent olive mills in Spain and Portugal and together we have adapted existing processes to enable a perfect solution for cat litter.

What is OLUV made from?

OLUV is 100% natural, the olive stone or ‘pit’ as it is known, is the by-product of both the olive oil and pitted-table olive industries. The stones are separated from the olive pulp using specially developed machines which abrade the stones helping to increase the absorbency of the product,  the stones are cleaned, dried, milled and graded to our specification. That’s it, nothing is added.

What does OLUV feel like?

OLUV is a soft, mixed-granular formulation, allowing the cats to express their natural burying behaviour.  The ‘earth-rake’ behaviour in the litter tray is displayed in kittens at around three weeks old which is why we’ve made OLUV with both cats and kittens in mind.

What does OLUV smell like?

OLUV is natural and fragrance free, just the way cats like it. The cats’ olfactory system – or sense of smell - is much more sensitive than that of humans. Some commercial litters use additives such as a citrus fragrance to make them more pleasing to the owner, even though the opposite may be true for the cat, indeed some added fragrances will deter your cat from using the tray. What's more, cats have a positive association with olives, that's why cats really do love OLUV.

Does OLUV track?

Tracking occurs when fine granules stick to the cats' paws when it leaves the litter tray, these granules are then dispersed around the house; clumping litters are the most likely to track. OLUV litter displays little to no tracking due to the larger, mixed granular formula but we do recommend that you place your litter tray on a non-slip mat to gather any litter that get flicked-out during the digging.

Does OLUV clump?

OLUV is completely natural and has no additives or chemicals added to make it clump like clay cat litter.  OLUV forms soft clumps which can be scooped from the litter tray using a solid scoop.

How does OLUV work?

OLUV is a soft clumping granular litter.  The unique composition is long-lasting and super-absorbent with natural deodorising qualities.

Is it easy to switch from my current litter to OLUV?

Yes, it is! However if your cat is litter-fussy we suggest that you take a gradual approach by placing some OLUV in with your old cat litter for a few days, gradually increasing the OLUV volume and transitioning to a full tray of OLUV over the course of a few days.  However, all our testers said their cats preferred OLUV’s granular formulation and no transitioning was necessary. Cats love OLUV.

Is OLUV safe for my kittens?

We recommend that you use OLUV once your kittens are weaned at about 12 weeks.

Can I use OLUV for multiple cats?

OLUV’s formulation is suitable for single and multiple cats. We recommend that there are at least enough trays as there are cats.

Is the OLUV bag recyclable?

The bag is made from paper, no handles mean the empty sacks can be placed straight in your home paper-recycling bin.

How does OLUV compare to other leading commercial brands?

OLUV is a natural, sustainable litter, it is unscented with natural odour control. Our litter is soft clumping meaning that only solids and wee can be removed from the tray by using a solid scoop.  OLUV was tried and tested alongside the leading brands and found to have either qualities that were equal to or exceeded the commercial alternatives they were compared with. We’re sure that you’ll be just as pleased with the switch to OLUV litter.

Can I flush OLUV down the toilet?

OLUV should not be flushed down the toilet, it should be bagged and placed in your regular waste bin.

Cat faces may contain infectious bacteria that can impact human and animal health, specifically the parasite toxoplasma gondii that causes toxoplasmosis.

Why is OLUV good for the environment?

There are two ways in which cat litter affects the environment: manufacturing and disposal. OLUV is produced from a natural by-product of the olive oil industry.  There’s no digging up of natural resources – it is totally sustainable and the disposal of OLUV is also environmentally friendly, it will decompose naturally in landfill if placed in your household waste.

Why is OLUV described as sustainable?

No precious primary resources are used to make OLUV litter, no trees are felled and there’s no mining. OLUV is developed from a by-product of the olive oil industry, each and every year we secure an annual bounty following harvest. OLUV is the litter that grows on trees!

Can you put OLUV biodegradable cat litter in your general waste bin?

Yes! OLUV will decompose naturally if placed in your household bin.  Unlike clay litter OLUV is plant based it is free of any manmade chemicals and it will break down naturally in landfill.

Can you compost biodegradable cat litter?

Any plant based cat litter with no additives can be composted.  We do not recommend that cat litter is placed in your compost bin for use as compost on vegetables as some cat faces contain the parasite toxoplasma gondii, which can spread through soil to vegetables.  It is safe to put your cat little in your general waste bin where it will break down naturally in landfill.

What does ethical cat litter mean?

OLUV is sourced sustainably from the by-product of the Olive oil industry.  It is packed in paper sacks  which are biodegradable and the once used the litter itself is biodegradable.  It genuinely is kind to pets and the planet!

Olive trees are equipped to handle drought, sub-zero temperatures, frost and even fire. Olive trees are extraordinarily tough - almost indestructible - and moreover, the annual olive harvest produces a

by-product bounty each and every year.

Revered since ancient times, farming olives remains relatively unchanged today. When the glorious oil has been extracted from the olive, the remaining stones are cleaned, dried and smooth-milled.

Olive trees capture more CO2 than they emit, therefore reducing carbon emissions.  An average life of between 300 – 600 years can be expected, although carbon-dating some of the world’s oldest known olive trees has put their age at approximately 2,000 years.
